Scottsdale, Arizona is the
"West's, Western Most Town." The area was arid desert in
1888, when U.S. Army Chaplain Winfield Scott settled at the base
of Camelback Mountain. Today, Scottsdale is one of the Southwest's
most popular resort Mecca's containing than half of Arizona's
resorts. The tourist trade has made the city a cultural oasis with
a variety of fine restaurants, art galleries (120+), luxury
shopping, studios, and museums. Scottsdale controls its growth
carefully to provide uninterrupted mountain views of the
spectacular McDowell Mountains, Pinnacle Peak, and Troon Mountain.
Protecting its desert areas with significant setbacks and
preserved washes, Scottsdale has development that have won awards
for desert restoration and retention of native vegetation. The
beloved Saguaro Cactus enjoys significant State protection and no
plants are allowed where Saguaro grow that would alter its native
environment or detract from the imposing figure of the Saguaro.
Medical facilities include 7 hospitals, a private neuro-psychiatric
hospital and Mayo Clinic/Southwest. Scottsdale covers an area of
185 square miles which includes 28 parks and 30 golf courses. The
waterfront shopping area near Old Town Scottsdale is patterned
after the River Walk in San Antonio.
