Young, Arizona is a unique community located in Pleasant Valley, approximately. 80 miles north-east of Phoenix in a small section of private land totally surrounded by the Tonto National Forest. The only access to the town is via unpaved mountainous roads with steep grades and curves that can require 4-wheel drive in the winter. This lack of easy access has contained the growth of the town and enabled it to retain its charm and old-west atmosphere. The town consists of a Ranger Station, community center, a motel, restaurants, two markets, a post office, antique stores, a thrift shop and a clinic. Young Public School boasts around 70 students and supports pre-school through 12th grade. The elevation is around 5,200 feet and daytime summer temperatures are usually around 90-95 ºF with cool nights. Monsoon storms begin in late June and by August the valley is so green and bursting with so many wildflowers it looks like a scene from England. In winter, the average high is 51º F with occasional snowstorms. Lows seldom dip below 10ºF. Annual precipitation is around 25 inches. Only 3% of land in Gila County is privately owned. In Young, acreage is available at a lower price than nearby towns where access is easier. A lot of people keep horses and mules and enjoy the unlimited distances they can ride in the forest land. There are properties available with meadows, in the tall pines, bordering a stocked trout stream, etc. Although power and telephones are available, there are no sewers and residents obtain water from private wells. Young is not zoned, so building permits are inexpensive and animals of all kinds are allowed. |
