Rogers, Arkansas's B.F. Sikes’ farmland became the site for the new town
of Rogers when the St. Louis & San Francisco (or Frisco) Railroad first
arrived on May 10, 1881. The town was named in honor of C.W. Rogers, the
Frisco’s general manager. Rogers grew rapidly as a shipping point on the Frisco and as a trade center. The town was surrounded by orchards and, in the early 1900s, Benton County produced more apples than any other county in the nation. Hard times during the Great Depression and difficult weather in the 1930s challenged local farmers, who then turned to the poultry industry as the predominant agriculture. The decades since World War II have seen dramatic growth for Rogers. The creation of Beaver Lake in the 1960s promoted tourism and retirement leisure, and industrial development and an influx of retirees from other areas combined to make Rogers the fastest growing city in Arkansas in the 1980s. Growth has challenged the resources of the city, but new arrivals have brought increasing ethnic diversity in the 2000s. |
