Antioch, California is one of
California's oldest cities, with a burgeoning population of professionals
and skilled workers. It is a crossroads linking the San Francisco/East Bay
region to Sacramento and the Central Valley...a gateway to the plentiful
recreational features and cultural facilities of Northern California and the
Bay Area...without the high price tag of most Bay Area real estate.
Rapid expansion in the retail, light industrial, service and office sectors is altering the nature of business in Antioch. Heavy industry, which once was a dominant employer, has become more concentrated and modernized in response to economic necessity.Major companies and small specialized businesses in and around Antioch have become important participants in the regional, state and national economies. Antioch's fast, convenient access to the Bay Area and Central Valley offers businesses outstanding market opportunities. Antioch is served by a network of highways and railroad lines including daily Amtrak passenger service with a depot in our historic Rivertown. The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system provides bus and rail connections throughout the Bay Area. Tri Delta Transit bus service travels throughout East County. Commercial and private air service is available 15 miles west at Buchanan Field. Five other major airports serve the area: Oakland, San Francisco, Sacramento, and San Jose International Airports, and Stockton Metropolitan Airport. Antioch offers a variety of existing and planned housing, including apartments, townhomes, single family residences, executive and estate homes. Older well-kept homes are found in the renovated downtown area and "Rivertown District." Housing generally averages 25 to 30 percent below comparable development in central Contra Costa County. The availability of quality, affordable housing is a distinct advantage in attracting and retaining qualified personnel. Numerous cultural and recreational choices are available to the residents of Antioch. The Community Center downtown, provides many special interest classes through the City's Leisure Services Department, and is the home of a fine theater facility for the performing arts. The Senior Center also offers a variety of programs and activities for citizens age 50 and over. In addition to twenty-three neighborhood parks, residents enjoy the city-owned Lone Tree Golf Course and Contra Loma Regional Park to swim, fish, hike, cycle or windsurf without leaving the city. Immediately southwest of Antioch lies Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve with miles of hiking trails and several regionally historic sites. The 100-acre Prewett Family Park in Southeast Antioch provides an aquatics facility which features 5 waterslides in addition to a toddler pool, lap pool and activity pool. Picnic areas and community center are also complete and in use, with a gymnasium, hiking trails, amphitheater and a county library branch planned for the future. Antioch Community Park in Southwest Antioch consists of softball diamonds, soccer fields, picnic areas, and hiking trails. A skateboard park is currently in the development stages. The Antioch Marina, built in 1988 at the northwestern end of the City of Antioch, joins the historic downtown part of the City. The Marina features 310 berths from 24 to 72 feet with 10-foot average water depth. The Marina facilities include a six-acre public park, a fishing pier, shore side picnic areas, and an observation pier. The following services are available at the Marina: berther's locked restrooms and showers, fuel dock, a waste pumpout station, electrical service, parking, laundry, guest dock/overnight berthing, yacht dealer, bait shop, marine insurance, "Humphrey's on the Delta" restaurant, public restrooms, and a wetland preserve with bird watching. The pleasant suburban lifestyle of Antioch is enhanced by the wealth of cultural and recreational pursuits available in the Bay Area. Professional and collegiate sports along with the enormously diverse cultural, artistic, and culinary offerings of the region are readily available to Antioch residents. Antioch has convenient access to the entire array of Northern California recreation. Popular destinations include the Monterey Peninsula, Napa Valley wineries, Northern California coast, Lake Tahoe, Sierra-Nevada ski slopes, Yosemite national Park, the Gold Country, and the San Joaquin Delta. Few areas rival the variety of recreational experiences available to local residents. The Antioch Unified School District serves the educational needs of the city's families. Additional schools are planned to serve new development in the southeast area including 5 elementary schools and a middle school. Recently completed is the new Deer Valley High School, a 57-acre state-of-the-art campus. Los Medanos Community College in neighboring Pittsburg offers two-year degrees in a variety of professional and technical fields. Within driving distance are Cal State Hayward and its extension campus in Concord; St. Mary's College in Moraga; John F. Kennedy University in Orinda; UC Berkeley; University of the Pacific in Stockton, and UC Davis. Sutter Delta Medical Center recently expanded to 111 beds, and Kaiser Permanente offices provide extensive medical services. In addition, health professionals in various disciplines maintain offices in Antioch and surrounding areas. Nearby medical facilities include John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek, Mt. Diablo Medical Center in Concord, and the Kaiser Permanente hospitals in Walnut Creek and Martinez. |
