San Clemente, California was incorporated in 1928 when Ole Hansen then gave 3,000 feet of beach, 18 miles of bridle trails and a municipal pier, a beach club with Olympic pool, a reservoir, a sewage and water system and a community clubhouse! On November 23, 1602 Sebastian Viscaino sailed his ship to an island off our shore and named it San Clemente because November 23rd was the Feast of Saint Clement. 232 years later the town was given the name of the island. Ole Hansen, along with three others, began development of San Clemente in 1925. It was the first planned community in California. Incorporated in 1928, San Clemente is a general law city with a Council-Manager form of government. There are five council people elected at large for staggering four year terms. The Council elects the Mayor annually from its ranks. The San Clemente Municipal pier is located at the foot of Avenida del Mar. There are many locally owned shops and boutiques in San Clemente as well as antique and art shops. There a great beaches, particularly surf spots such as Tresles and Cotton's Point (near former President Richard Nixon's estate). There are currently three fine golf courses in San Clemente, two of which are public and feature lots of ocean view holes. The private course was designed by Gary Player and is a Scottish Links styled course. There are 13 parks and ball fields, lots of public tennis courts (some with lights), the fishing pier, bicycle paths, jogging trails and a public pool. And of course the beaches, most of which have fire pits for bar-b-ques. There are lots and lots of community weekend events all year around (we have such great weather!) including The Fiesta, a huge "street Party", the Ocean Festival, a two day extravaganza at the beach, Farmer's Market, Historical Parades, Clam Chowder Cook Offs, Salsa Challenges, Lion's Fair, the list goes on and on and on! There also is a very active Boys' and Girls' Club and two Senior Centers that also feature non-stop interesting activities. There are four elementary schools within San Clemente's boundaries, two middle schools and one high school. And yes, they do have surfing classes! They are a part of the Capistrano Unified School District. There is one Community College within a half hour's drive and a satellite University too. |
