San Rafael, CA is the commercial and government center of Marin County, California. Marin's population growth rate remains one of the lowest in the Bay Area and the state. The 2000 census showed the county's population to be 247,289, compared to 1990's census figure of 230,096. this has yielded a growth rate of more than 7.5 percent for the decade. San Rafael's population grew from 48,404 in 1990 to 56,063 in 2000, a ten-year growth rate of 15.8 percent.

San Rafael is located halfway between San Francisco and California's famous wine country, is Marin's oldest city.

San Rafael is Marin Counties central city. Located in the center of the county's eastern urban corridor, San Rafael is the county's governmental, business, and cultural center. Famous for its favorable climate, San Rafael makes a central base for taking day trips to scenic locations such as the Napa/Sonoma wine country, the Pt. Reyes National Seashore, and Muir Woods.
