Woodbury, Connecticut was settled by three families in
1672 and was incorporated in 1674. Woodbury once included what is today
Roxbury, Southbury, Bethlehem and Washington. Today it is home to over
8,000 residents and covers 36.8 square miles. The Historical District
includes the Town Green which is a lovely example of Traditionalism.
Woodbury's charm is carefully preserved by it's residents. Houses in Woodbury include some of the original houses from the 1700s. Recent construction encompasses an array of Colonials, deluxe condominiums, apartment complexes and new homes built with traditional designs. Woodbury is located in Litchfield County in west-central Connecticut. Well known for its variety of stately homes and churches along Main Street, Woodbury is also famous for its many antique shops, picturesque farmlands, rolling hills and flowing streams and is known as the Antique Capital of Connecticut. Located in the foothills of Litchfield County, Woodbury was established by a land transfer with the local Indians on April 12, 1659. The form of government is Board of Selectman and Town Meeting. The town covers 36.8 square miles. Woodbury part of Regional School District 14 along with Bethlehem, maintains two elementary schools (Woodbury Mitchell and Bethlehem Elementary School), the Woodbury Middle School and Nonnewaug High School which boasts one of the largest and best vocational/agricultural programs in the state. In April of 1995, Mitchell School was awarded the Best of State by Redbook in the America's Best Schools Project, was named by the US Department of Education as a 1993-1994 National Blue Ribbon Elementary School and the Connecticut Association of Schools also named Mitchell School a Connecticut School of the Year. Proud of these achievements, the Mitchell School students, faculty and parents held a march along Main Street in celebration!! The town's principle recreation area, known as "The Hollow" is located just off of Main Street and provides swimming, ball fields, a playground, picnic area and pavilion. Orenaug Park is another recreation area with a hiking trail and a fire tower that overlooks the hills and valleys. Proud of its sophisticated small town charm and history, Woodbury enjoys its town-sponsored annual events -- Memorial Day Parade, Woodbury Christmas Festival, Woodbury-Bethlehem Youth Council Block Party, Lions Club Christmas Eve Luminaries, Lions Club Car Show, not to mention the many social, civic and business-sponsored events that have become well known throughout Connecticut. These events, together with the spirit of the community, have made this town one of the most delightful in which to reside. Woodbury has a medium household income of $67,000 that rises to $84,000 for households with children. Today 60% of the households are occupied by a married couple and 30% contain children. Approximately 75% of the homes are owner occupied. The average house cost $192,000 and has 3-bedrooms; the average price of a condo is $75,000. The average SAT score is 1002 with 495 on Math and 507 on Verbal. Approximately 82% of the high school seniors took the SAT with 40% going on to attend a 4-year college and 43% entering 2-year programs. |
