Longwood is located in Seminole county in central Florida just 12 miles north of Orlando. In 1873 E. W, Henck joined a small group of settlers at Myrtle Lake. As postmaster, he was instrumental in changing the name to Longwood, after a suburb of Boston he had helped to lay out. By 1887 the population numbered 1,027, and public buildings included five churches, three hotels, eight stores and a weekly newspaper. Advertising on the back of the Longwood brochure, E.W. Henck offered lots from $100 to $500 at $10 to $50 down, with balance at $5 to $20 per month. Prices have risen, but Longwood remains a desirable place to live. |
