Windermere, Florida residents have been "getting away from it
all" by taking up residence in this little jewel of a town. This
"island village among the lakes," as it has been described, is 12
miles southwest of Orlando, but the difference in pace is worlds apart.
Here, many of the residents make their homes on the dazzling and pristine
Butler Chain of Lakes. In an area that was once mostly rolling orange
groves, a six mile chain of nine interconnected lakes will inspire love at
first sight.
You'd be hard pressed to find anyone who'll disagree that these are Central Florida's most beautiful lakes. The state protects the 4,500 acre chain under the designation of an "outstanding Florida Waterway," for these spring-fed gems are so clear that you can literally see the white sand bottom as you float along in your boat. The largest, Lake Butler, is more than 1600 sparkling acres and Lake Tibet measures 1,200 acres. No less lovely are the other links, Lakes Down, Bessie, Blance, Chase, Isleworth, Louise and Pocket. In the 1970's, Windermere was out in the country. But this is Florida, where spectacular waterfront eventually spells prime real estate development. Close to the posh country club communities of BAY HILL and ISLEWORTH, Windermere has become one of the "in" spots for the country lifestyle. Despite on-going development, the pace and tone of a small town remains. Most new homes are required to be built on a minimum lot size of one acre. This is an area where limos are seen carrying real live Hollywood stars around as they shop for homes near "Hollywood East." |
