Challis, Idaho is the seat of Custer County ID. It is the site of the headquarters of the Land of the Yankee Fork Idaho State Centennial Park. Challis is still the economic center of mines, ranches and farms. Major agricultural products include livestock, hay, grain and seed potatoes. Mineral resources include gold, silver, molybdenum and 40 other minerals in sufficient quantity to be mined commercially. The Custer County area is still known as one of the richest mineral belts in North America and continues to lure new pioneers to the riches and wonder of her natural resources.

From the south, you approach Challis on US 93 over Willow Creek Summit (7,280 ft.) and through Grand View Canyon before entering Round Valley. As you continue you'll meet Scenic Byway 75, coming into US 93 from the west. Heading west, you'll be mesmerized by the winding road toward the headwaters of the Salmon River and the view of the spectacular Sawtooth Mountains. Heading north you'll follow the river downstream toward the town of Salmon at the foot of the Bitterroot Mountains, where Lewis & Clark crossed the Continental Divide.

The seasonal changes provide us with four distinct natural displays of color; from the warm autumn hues, to the cool winter white of snow capping our mountain tops to the first flush of green in the spring and the wildflower show in early spring.

Daily temperatures can fluctuate up to 40 degrees year round, even after the hottest day; you can expect a cool comfortable evening.
