| Grayslake, Illinois is located in Central Lake
County, approximately forty (40) miles north of the Chicago business "Loop"
and fourteen (14) miles west of Lake Michigan. Neighboring communities
include Libertyville and Mundelein to the southeast, Gurnee to the east,
Lindenhurst to the north, and Round Lake and Round Lake Beach to the west
and south. Gray's Lake, a 78 acre recreational lake, is located within the
corporate boundaries of the Village. A 1997 special census showed
that the population of Grayslake had risen to
16,967 total residents; a 15% increase from the 1995 census of 14,745
residents, and a 99.6% increase from the 1990 census of 7,388 residents.
Village Building Department statistics show a continued increasing
population, with a projected fully developed level of 22,000 residents.
Grayslake's corporate boundaries
encompass approximately 12 square miles. Village officials estimate that 60%
of the land currently within the Village boundaries is developed or approved
for development and 40% is undeveloped. The Village has annexed 3,700 acres
over the past five years. A survey of unincorporated land surrounding the
Village suggests that there are approximately 700 acres available to be
annexed. |
