Lemont, Illinois was Settled in 1836, and incorporated in 1873, the Village of Lemont offers the look and feel of the past combined with a progressive eye to the future. The historic Village, with a population of 13,100 residents, is nestled among the bluffs of the Des Plaines River Valley offering scenic views unique in the Chicagoland area.

As one of the oldest communities in northeastern Illinois, Lemont's history originated with the construction of the Illinois and Michigan Canal which linked the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes. Subsequent quarrying, railroad and canal employment brought many Irish, German, Polish and other European immigrants who chose to settle and remain.

To preserve its historic heritage, active efforts are underway to revitalize the downtown area while maintaining the distinctive architectural presence which exists. Lemont has aggressively undertaken projects to improve the historic downtown area. The revitalization of the downtown area is exemplified by the success of the quaint shops and restaurants which have located in Lemont. As one of the communities within the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor, much of this success relates to the tourism experienced in Lemont.

People have discovered Lemont. As the present home to the Advil Western Open Golf Tournament and the filming site of several recent motion pictures, commercials and a television show, the hidden charms of Lemont are becoming known. Residential growth has boomed, providing prospective residents with a wide range of housing styles and options. Numerous subdivision developments are currently under construction.

Hilly, tree-lined streets provide neighborhoods with distinctive character and quality of life. Recreational opportunities abound in Lemont with literally thousands of acres of adjacent forest preserves, wildlife areas, golf courses, bicycle trails and local parks. Excellent schools and a public library furnish the educational needs of the community.

Public transportation via the Metra Heritage Corridor commuter line links the community with downtown Chicago. Local business development interest has increased in Lemont as the extension of the North-South Tollway (I-355) and the 127th Street interchange moves closer to construction. This roadway extension, along with our proximity to I-55 and I-80, will make Lemont a prime destination for future business development. The establishment of new retail businesses, including Jewel-Osco, Sears Hardware and Walgreens are evidence of the growth of business in Lemont.

The $1,000,000 renovation and architectural refurbishment of the Village Hall and the $4,700,000 streetscape projects on Main and Canal Streets in Historic Downtown Lemont are indicative of the community's desire to cherish the past while welcoming the future.
