| Burlington, Iowa was founded in 1833. Burlington has deep
historical roots in based on the frontier traditions. It is nestled in and
around four hills with spectacular views of the Mississippi River.
It was a typical river town of a by gone era. Burlington enjoyed steadily
growth and eventually became the home of the Burlington Railroad, now
known as Burlington Northern. The firm's president, Charles E. Perkins,
lived in Burlington. His mansion, known as "The Apple Trees",
still stands and is used as a museum by the Des Moines County Historical
Society. It is located in Perkins Park.
There are many beautiful parks in Burlington. The largest, Crapo Park, attracts sightseers from more that 50 miles. Mosquito Park is located on a river bluff on North Hill, it offers one of the most striking views on the Mississippi. Burlington has many old, well-maintained brick homes that line the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi. These neighborhoods, with flower beds and well manicured lawns, reflect obvious pride in Burlington's traditions. Burlington is known for its schools both public and private. Residents look forward to the annual Steamboat Days celebration along the riverfront. Downtown Burlington, undergoing a revival sparked by "Main Street", has stores that have been in business more than 100 years. There are several new shopping centers and smaller clusters of stores in just about every part of the community. Burlington has many natives who would never think of living anywhere except their hometown. Burlington has an active Arts Council and Civic Music organization. Iowa City, home of the University of Iowa, is only 75 miles. Burlington is a family community. Burlington is the medical center for much of southeast Iowa and nearby western Illinois. Burlington also has an attraction called Snake Alley, dubbed by Ripley's Believe It Or Not as "the crookedest street in the world. |
