| Kittery Maine was settled in the early 1600s, Kittery is
the oldest community in Maine. Kittery sits directly across the Piscataque
River from Portsmouth, and is conveniently located halfway between Boston
and Portland on Interstate I-95. Kittery has a rich maritime history. For
many years the town was the shipbuilding center; in fact, the Portsmouth
Naval Shipyard is still open, serving U.S. Naval submarines. Fort McClary
and Fort Foster, built a century ago to protect the coastline, now operate
as public parks. Residents and visitors can swim and tan at beautiful Sea
Point Beach, or explore nearby islands off the coast. In recent years,
Kittery has gained a reputation all over New England for its outlet mall
shopping along U.S. Route-1. Kittery's retail stores, restaurants, and
maritime interests provide a solid economic base for this thriving
community. |
