| The streets of the old whaling village of Edgartown,
Martha's Vineyard's first colonial settlement, are lined with upscale
shops, art galleries, fine restaurants, and elegant churches. The stately
houses in the historic district, many of them carefully restored sea
captains' homes, are surrounded by well-manicured lawns and blossoming
gardens. Some have lovely views of the Edgartown harbor. Built in 1843 at
the height of the whaling industry, there is a famous Old Whaling Church
with its six majestic columns commanding Main Street and now serving
primarily as a performing arts center. Take just a short drive and you
will be in the country side with its rolling fields, cool woodlands, salt
ponds and glorious wildlife. Directly south of Edgartown is an area known
as Katama, featuring contemporary vacation homes and a three-mile public
barrier beach called South Beach, with surf on one side and protected salt
pond on the other. Relaxing on the beach, swimming, kayaking, sailing,
playing golf or tennis, hiking, bicycling and roller bladeing on the bike
paths, or just lounging on the deck or patio with a good book are all
possible in this delightful town. The off season months have their own
charm as well and are should not be avoided! There is much that goes on
all year round!
