Manhattan, Montana was founded when families from the Netherlands moved here to grow barley for malters near the new little town of Manhattan - named by a group of New York City investors who operated the Manhattan Malting Company. They settled together in a tightly knit society that flourishes today. This extensive farm was located next to the city and "the largest body of productive land between Dakota and Puget sound." Prohibition eventually ended a profitable twenty-three years in the malting business, but by 1898, Manhattan was becoming quite important to the Valley with about 150 inhabitants and a school enrollment of 75. There was a general store, two hotels, one meat market, two blacksmith shops and one saloon.

Today, Manhattan's most productive industries are seed potatoes, dairy and wheat farms, commercial beef, registered cattle along with some unique cottage businesses such as food specialties, woodcarving, artisans, and antiques.

Downtown Manhattan offers a grocery, hardware, auto repair, art gallery, museum, antique shop and specialty foods. A medical clinic, chiropractor, real estate, insurance and dentist offices are available plus a full-service bank. Visitors come from miles around to dine in the rustic atmosphere of some of the best restaurants in the state and to visit Big Sky Carvers.

Fishing is a favorite pastime with miles of "blue ribbon" trout streams in the area. Public golf courses are a short drive and nearby National Forests provide miles of hiking and biking trails in addition to high mountain lakes for camping and fishing. For history buffs, there is a wealth of information in local museums and libraries about the Lewis and Clark Expedition that explored this area in the summers of 1805 and 1806.
