Dover (New Hampshire) an industrial city, is the seat of Strafford County, southeastern New Hampshire, at falls of the Cocheco River; incorporated as a city 1855. Major manufactures include machinery, textiles, tools and dies, plastic products, and electronic equipment. Of note is the Woodman Institute, with a museum containing exhibits on local history and natural science. One of the oldest settlements in the state, the community, founded in 1623, was called Bristol and Northam before its present name was adopted in the mid-17th century. The early settlers suffered frequently from attacks by Native Americans, the most destructive of which was the Cocheco Massacre of 1689.
