Lookout Mountain, TN has the unique distinction of actually rising up
from the surrounding valley floor in three states: Tennessee, Alabama, and
Georgia. The mountain is 83 miles long with a good portion of it in Georgia.
The Georgia section of Lookout Mountain varies in height, but it pretty much
ranges from 1,500 to 2,200 feet. It is located in the extreme northwestern
corner of Georgia in Walker and Dade counties. Lookout Mountain has a rich history. The name comes from the Creek Indian word Chatanuga, which means rock coming to an end. This is in reference to the end of the mountain, which is in Tennessee, and overlooks the city of Chattanooga. For centuries Native Americans lived on and around Lookout Mountain. As a matter of fact Indian remains have been found in Georgia, near Lookout Mountain, that date back to around 200 B.C. In more recent times, November 24, 1863, the mountain was the place where a small engagement occurred during The War Between the States. Historians gave it the name “The Battle Above the Clouds, because when the battle was fought low hanging clouds obscured the top of the mountain. No one in Chattanooga could actually see the battle. There are many attractions and things to do on Lookout Mountain, but the two most well known in Georgia are Rock City Gardens and Cloudland Canyon State Park. Rock City Gardens is a fun family outing with lots of things for the kids and adults to see and do. Probably the most famous part of Rock City Gardens is where you can stand in the park and see seven different states! Cloudland Canyon State Park sits on the western side of the mountain near present day Trenton, Georgia. The park offers lots of hiking and camping opportunities, as well as, many breath taking views. As a matter of fact, many people consider Cloudland Canyon to be the most scenic park in North Georgia. |
