In Virginia's Fairfax County, the City of Falls Church and its surrounding neighbors have a history that stretches back 300 years to early American colonial days. The first settlers came to Fairfax County in the late 17th century. They established a small community around the intersection of two ancient Indian trails that are now historic Virginia roadways, the Leesburg Pike and Lee Highway. The first permanent structure, Big Chimneys, was built in 1699 and served as a rest stop for travelers. In the 18th century, tobacco planters acquired land surrounding Big Chimneys , and The Falls Church settlement began to grow. After the construction of the Alexandria-Leesburg turnpike around 1840, and the arrival of railroads in 1859, Falls Church expanded further. Following the conclusion of the Civil War, northern settlers and freed slaves moved into the area. In 1875, Falls Church was incorporated as a town and established a public school. At the turn of the century, the town experienced a population boom. The number of citizens exceeded 1,100, and by 1910, Falls Church was the largest town in Fairfax county. By 1948, Falls Church had obtained independent city status and made improvements in education, transportation, and public works. It now had a population of 5,000. During the 1950's, the city built three new public schools that have since won wide recognition for their high academic excellence. Since 1948, the city's municipal services have improved and more than a dozen parks have been built. In 1962, Falls Church was honored as an All-American City. It also has earned Tree City, USA, status for the last twenty one years. Today, the 9,500 residents in Falls Church are part of a thriving economic region of more than 150,000 proud Virginians and are celebrating 300 years of tradition and pride. |
